Best AI first-round interview tools (2026)

Ten AI tools can credibly run a first-round interview in 2026. The honest answer to "which is best" is: it depends on who is doing the hiring. For founders and small teams running screens themselves, Vettika (packs from $19 for 10, 3 free) and Mokka fit. For high-volume hourly hiring, Ribbon and Paradox lead. For enterprise structured interviewing with ATS integration, HireVue and Sapia are the defaults. For engineering roles at scale, Karat is the human-in-loop option. Full breakdown, pricing, and a matrix below.

How to choose

Pick by team size, not by feature count.

The biggest mistake is buying enterprise tooling for a small-team problem (or the reverse). Match the buyer profile first, then compare features inside the shortlist.

Founders / small teams (1–20 people)

You are the person running screens. Optimize for: pricing on the page, no sales call, working today. Vettika, Ribbon (if hourly), and Mokka (if you want sourcing too) are the realistic shortlist.

In-house recruiters / TA (50–500 people)

You probably have an ATS. Optimize for: ATS integration, a free trial that proves it before procurement, and bias-audit posture. Metaview, Vettika, BrightHire (for human-interview intelligence) cover the ground.

Agencies / talent solopreneurs

You want white-label and pay-as-you-go. Vettika Agency tier ($149/mo, 10 seats, 100 interviews + $1.00/extra, white-label transcript, no-shows free), Mokka, or specialized agency tools fit. Avoid enterprise platforms with annual contracts.

Enterprise (1,000+ hires / year)

You will buy on ATS integration, compliance program, and assessment depth — not on a free trial. HireVue, Paradox, Sapia, Karat (for eng) are the realistic shortlist. Vettika is not the right fit at this volume yet.

Methodology

How we picked.

We started with vendors that explicitly run a first-round interview (conversational, scored output), not generic recruiting platforms. We pulled hero copy, ICP framing, and pricing directly from each vendor's public site, plus three independent listicles (Mokka, InterviewFlowAI, GoPerfect) for cross-reference on pricing where vendor sites hide it.

We disclose conflict of interest up front: we (Vettika) made one of the tools on this list. We deliberately did not put ourselves first or write the entry differently — the same fields, the same neutral tone. If we are not the right fit for your team size, the "How to choose" section names someone else.

We excluded sourcing-only tools (Juicebox, Fetcher in its outbound mode), assessment-only platforms (Pymetrics, Harver) and talent marketplaces (Mercor) — they are real products but do not run a first-round interview. We also excluded vendors with no public site or last update > 24 months ago.

Where a vendor does not publish list pricing, we say so rather than guess. Where a public listicle quotes a number, we cite the listicle rather than treat the number as confirmed. This is an honest snapshot of the 2026 landscape, not a ranked leaderboard.

FAQ

Questions buyers actually search.

Which AI interview tool is best for a founder running their first hires?+

For a founder personally running first-round screens, the realistic shortlist is Vettika (voice, 3 free interviews, then pre-paid packs from $19 for 10 ($1.90 each), no-shows free, no procurement) and Mokka (if you also want sourcing and outreach in one tool). Skip enterprise platforms like HireVue and Paradox — they are priced and sold for organisations 100x your size.

Is voice AI interviewing legal in 2026?+

Yes, when handled correctly. In New York City, NYC Local Law 144 (effective since 2023) requires a bias audit within the prior year, public disclosure of the audit summary, and candidate notice at least 10 business days before AEDT use. In the EU, the EU AI Act classifies hiring AI as high-risk, requiring transparency, human oversight, and documentation. In Nigeria, NDPR governs data handling. Pick a vendor that publishes their bias audit and supports the audit-log surface you need.

How is voice AI different from one-way video interviewing?+

One-way video tools (Hireflix, Spark Hire, Willo, early HireVue) record the candidate answering pre-set questions on their own time. There is no listening, no follow-up, no adaptation. Voice AI tools (Vettika, Ribbon, Talentpilot) join the call as a real participant — they can press on a vague answer, change the next question based on what was said, and end the conversation when the goal is met. Different category, different candidate experience.

Can candidates cheat with ChatGPT during a voice AI interview?+

Real-time voice with adaptive follow-ups makes scripted ChatGPT replies fall apart. The agent catches hesitation, mid-thought pivots, and context-misses that a script cannot handle. Some vendors layer proctoring on top; others (including Vettika) choose not to — the argument being that real-time conversational pressure is enough and proctoring damages candidate trust. Pick the trade-off that matches your hiring culture.

What should I actually pay for a first-round AI interview in 2026?+

Published prices in the market range from $0.99 per interview (InterviewFlowAI) to roughly $1.58–$1.90 per interview on pre-paid packs (Vettika: $19 for 10 or $79 for 50, plus monthly Pro at $49 and Agency at $149) for self-serve. Per-seat tools sit at $199–699 per month (Mokka, Fetcher). Enterprise platforms (HireVue, Paradox, Sapia, Karat) are custom-quoted and routinely cited at $30k+ per year. If you are not running enterprise volume, do not buy enterprise pricing.

Full disclosure

We made one of these.

If you fit the "founders / small teams" profile above, the easiest way to decide is to actually run a first-round. First 3 interviews free, no card.

If we are not the right fit, the list above names someone who is.
